Kommentar/Beschreibung

The Second World War and the experience of Nazi rule had a lasting impact on societies across Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe. Their effects on political culture and historical memory are still felt in many places today, especially as Russia’s war against Ukraine has brought the reality of war back to Europe. From the outset, the policy of occupation in Eastern Europe was aimed at exploitation, deportation and murder. However, the initial conditions in various European countries differed, not least from the perspective of racial ideology, meaning that the respective objectives of the occupation, the practices employed, and the reactions and scope for action of the actors involved varied as well. Using case studies, the course will examine the complex relationships between occupiers and the occupied and ask, how did occupation systems force, structure, and normalize different forms of participation in violence and governance. We will also look at economic exploitation, repression and persecution, the everyday lives of specific groups and actors, and cultural life under the conditions of occupation. A comparative perspective will enable us to identify both overarching patterns of German occupation as well as differences and national specificities. Last but not least, the course will also examine how the years of war and occupation were dealt with in various countries after 1945.
