Kommentar/Beschreibung

For several years, populist parties of different ideological provenience have been successful around the world. In several countries, including Greece, Hungary, Argentina, or the United States, populists have gained not only parliamentary representation but were able to seize office. Once in power, populists affect democratic institutions, such as the rule of law, the division of powers and, particularly in case of the populist radical right, minority rights. In the light of the populists' electoral rise, liberal democracy is under an increasing level of stress.

This course will explore the ideological variety, the electoral and social conditions of success as well of the consequences of populism in power. In addition, the course shall discuss the responses of the mainstream parties and reflect on how institutions of militant democracy should engage and have the capability of combatting the rise of populism to begin with.
