Comment/Description

This applied seminar begins by encouraging students to reflect on their social positions within an increasingly diverse society. It invites participants to engage in meaningful discussions around ethnic and racial diversity, particularly as it manifests in German classrooms. A key focus is on recognizing and working through the challenging emotions that often accompany these conversations.

Students will learn to acknowledge and sit with the discomfort that can arise from racial and ethnic tensions, using that discomfort as a starting point for growth and open dialogue. The seminar emphasizes understanding the emotional experiences of both White individuals and racialized individuals, and explores how these emotions influence inter-racial interactions and broader structural dynamics.

Towards the end of the course, we explore the principles of active anti-racism and allyship, focusing on practical ways to implement these in classroom settings. Overall, the seminar aims to create a safe and honest learning environment where students can thoughtfully examine sensitive issues related to racism and develop practical strategies for anti-racist practice

The seminar will be offered in English. Assessment will include group presentations and short individual reflection papers.
