“Sexualit*ies and Gender(s) in the Early Writings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam,” at Stanford University: 19 – 21 November 2024
As part of an ongoing collaboration on the comparative study of “Sexualit*ies and Gender(s) in the Early Writings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam,” with Humboldt University of Berlin, and the Universities of Halle and Graz, the Taube Center for Jewish Studies at Stanford University, in collaboration with the Department of Religious Studies, is pleased to announce a Winter School, which is scheduled to take place from November 19 – 21, 2024.
The 2024 Winter Seminar will focus on the topics of same-sex relations and non-binary genders, as well as on femininity (particularly as manifested in the ritualization of menstruation). Participants will engage in close reading of early texts from each respective tradition, and will study the textual and thematic resonances and diverging perceptions of the body, sexuality, and gender in the three Abrahamic religions. The Winter School aims to promote interdisciplinary and interreligious exchange between doctoral students and researchers and international scholars, and to create an “inter-theological” platform.

Those wishing to take part in the Winter School should be willing to work closely with selected texts. Prerequisites for participation include proficiency in one of the following languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, or Arabic.
Eligible participants include doctoral candidates at all stages of their PhD, postdocs, and those with an interest in pursuing a doctorate in the fields of theology, religious studies, and gender studies. Funding is not offered and participants must be willing and able to fund themselves, or to obtain third-party funding.
