Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this seminar we will examine formative components of British society and their bearing on Britain's culture.


Understanding institutions as "organised elements of society" (R. Williams) we will encounter institutions that exercise power in various forms and shape Britain's social fabric. Points of inquiry will involve historic developments to a certain extent as well as the present situation.

Among our objects of study will be the legal system, religion, education, the media but also institutions that exist as organisations and have acquired a status of nationwide esteem such as the National Health Service (NHS) or the BBC as well as institutions of cultural preservation and heritage management like the National Trust.
