Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar aims to introduce the university or campus novel, a genre that entered its most productive phase after 1945 in mostly satiric form. We will deal with a selection of representative novels, mostly by British authors, beginning with Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim (1954), a text which, as some critics contend, redefined the whole genre. Further novels by David Lodge and Julie Schumacher as well as some shorter material will widen our scope of the genre's potential with phenomena to consider such as intertextuality, metafictional elements, genre crossovers, and self-reflexive narrative. With the obvious impetus of the texts often appearing satiric and critical of the university as an institution, there will also be ample opportunity to explore the genre's relation to larger discourses and contexts such as the expansion of tertiary education after World War II and the transformation and questioning of the university as a seat of education, research, and learning.

Students are expected to begin reading Lucky Jim by the beginning of term.
