Kommentar/Beschreibung

The seminar will explore classical works of British fiction that have defined Gothic themes and forms in the long eighteenth century. The Gothic famously wants to ‘curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart’ (Mary Shelley), and tells of horrors as well as sublime terrors, the ‘strongest emotion which the mind is capable of feeling’ (Edmund Burke). In addition to Walpole’s and Shelley’s classic novels, The Castle of Otranto (1764) and Frankenstein (1818), we will read and discuss excerpts of selected Gothic poetry and prose of the period in order to obtain in-depth knowledge and understanding of key character and story conventions, aesthetics, and themes and motifs of the Gothic. These considerations will be complemented by selected aspects of eighteenth-century thinking and culture.

The primary texts given below must be purchased in advance of the teaching term and in exactly the formats and editions given below. There will be short assignments during the semester, and an oral discussion of written work. The module examination (“Prüfungsleistung”) will be a written essay exam (120 mins). Further details will be introduced in the first session.

Please note that prior registration for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
