Kommentar/Beschreibung

Route 66 has always served as an important icon of the American Dream, representing mobility and freedom. The Route 66 Centennial in 2026 celebrates this historic highway, often called the “Mother Road” or “the Main Street of America,” which passes through eight states and has a varied literary and cultural history. We will primarily explore Route 66 as both cultural space and myth, and examine a wide variety of issues and theoretical ideas, including national parks and environmental change, the Great Depression and John Steinbeck’s work The Grapes of Wrath, popular culture (music and films), racism (e.g., the Green Book) and racism, gender and class issues, heritage preservation, and its role in contemporary memory and the Centennial festivities. The course emphasizes research-based, collaborative learning: students will work in groups on selected topics, read critical works on their respective topics, develop academic posters that will be exhibited as part of our one-week-long celebration of the institute’s 150th anniversary on July 3, 2026. To prepare for this, students will be introduced to principles of effective poster design and academic Third Mission communication.

Course material will be made available on the ILIAS platform.

Studienleistung: Group presentations.
Prüfungsleistung: Poster and a short oral exam.
