Comment/Description

From TikTok recipe hacks and Instagram reels of Ballerina Farm to Netflix food shows and YouTube mukbangs, digital media shapes the way we consume, cook, eat, and think about food. Since the rise of “Web 2.0” (DiNucci) in the early 2000s, digital and social media have not only reshaped communication and self-representation but also profoundly influenced our relationship with food. This seminar explores how food is represented across different platforms and how digital networks create publics around eating, cooking, and sharing. Together we will discuss how platforms such as online news platforms, Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok transform everyday practices into cultural performances, and how issues of identity, community, memory, and solidarity, among others, surface in digital food cultures (Lupton). Alongside key readings in digital food cultures, students will also be introduced to key methods in digital food studies, learning how to critically analyze food content online and trace its broader cultural and political significance. Anchored in food studies, media studies, and American cultural studies, this course offers students the tools to understand how digital platforms, networks, and publics are reshaping our relationship with food today.

This seminar is recommended for more advanced BA students.
