Kommentar/Beschreibung

Together we will read Joan Wallach Scott's book "Sex and Secularism". In seven sessions, we will discuss one chapter from the book each time. In doing so, we will explore the question on how the emancipatory effect of secularism on women has been taken for granted. We will discuss Scott's findings which she summarizes as follows: "First, the notion that equality between the sexes is inherent to the logic of secularism is false; second, this false historical asser¬tion has been used to justify claims of white, Western, and Christian racial and religious superiority in the present as well as the past; and third, it has functioned to distract attention from a persistent set of difficulties related to differences of sex, which Western and non¬ Western, Christian and non¬ Christian nations share, despite the different ways in which they have ad¬dressed those difficulties. Gender inequality is not simply the by¬ product of the emergence of modern Western nations, char-acterized by the separation between the public and the private, the political and the religious; rather, that inequality is at its very heart. And secularism is the discourse that has served to account for this fact."
