Kommentar/Beschreibung

One of the basic hypotheses of cognitive linguistics is that "language is not an autonomous cognitive faculty" and "the representation of linguistic knowledge is essentially the same as the representation of other conceptual structures." (Croft /Cruse 2004:2)
In this course, we study the general perspective on language adopted by cognitive linguistics. We read and discuss introductory texts which cover central concepts like conceptual metaphor, image schemas, mental spaces, frames, construction grammar, prototypicality and radial sets. We also apply the cognitive perspective to text and discourse and try simple experiments to verify the theory.
