Module assignments

Comment/Description

We will first discuss a few basics of Ovid’s book Metamorphoses and then trace the ways in which a few selected stories reappear as creative transformations in African American texts ranging from Phyllis Wheatley’s poetry and Charles W. Chesnutt’s and Zora Neale Hurston’s short stories to Toni Morrison’s recent novel. This approach is part of what has been called Classica Africana, which examines the relationship between African(-American) literature, ancient texts, and present-day issues. We will address many topics, such as intertextuality, Black American history, Black identities and Black Feminism, and different genres (poetry, prose) from the early days of the U.S. to today.

Ovid. Metamorphoses. Oxford World’s Classics, Oxford University Press, 2009.
Morrison, Toni. God Help the Child. Vintage, 2016.
