Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar aims to address the peculiar relationship of fact and fiction, of story and history. The historical novel seems particularly interesting in that respect for obvious reasons. Owing to the nature of the genre, the theoretical background of this seminar needs to consider questions of literary stylistics and of historiography alike.

We will try to develop an understanding of narrative strategies that form the genre with the help of a broad selection of texts. Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy (1817) introduces us to the first prominent master of historical fiction and his fusion of romance and novel in a text concerned with the Scottish uprising of 1715. Pat Barker's postmodern Regeneration (1991) addresses the First World War, the poet Siegfried Sassoon's protest against it, and the development of psychological trauma research at that time. Finally, Benjamin Myers' The Gallows Pole (2017) leads us into remote Yorkshire during the eighteenth century, where a gang of criminal and violent outlaws tries to resist the changes of the beginning industrial age.

Required editions:
Sir Walter Scott, Rob Roy (Oxford World's Classics, 9780199549887)
Pat Barker, Regeneration (Penguin, 9780141030937)
