Modulzuordnungen

Kommentar/Beschreibung

We will first briefly examine the history of the Gothic novel in England and then trace the traveling tradition across the Atlantic. We will explore how Edgar Allan Poe draws on English influences as well as German Dark Romanticism (Ger. “Schauerromantik”) and develops a theory of short texts that includes poetry and prose. His theory and his short stories (“The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Black Cat”) not only reflect European influences but also show his efforts to break away from European traditions and create a genre that is, ultimately, both European and American. We will then explore how the seeds sown by Poe blossom in various – primarily very contemporary – American literary landscapes: Southern Gothic (William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor), African American Gothic (Charles W. Chesnutt, Chesya Burke), LatinX Gothic (Helena Maria Viramontes, Silvia Moreno-Garcia), Asian American Gothic (Alexander Chee, Lan Samantha Chang), and Indigenous Gothic (David Heska Wanbli Weiden, Waubgeshig Rice). Along our journey into the dark realms of American literature, we will encounter a wide range of topics, including modernity and the anxiety of change, the grotesque and the struggles between good and evil, the horrors of slavery and immigration, haunting memories of a past that is still present, and imagined revenge.
This seminar is “staatsexamensrelevant.”
