Kommentar/Beschreibung

What exactly constitutes a family? What holds families together in time and space? What causes them to break apart and find their way back to each other? What is love for families, what is care for families, and what are the limits of love and care with regard to family relations? How do intersecting cultural notions, social norms, political and economic contexts, as well as the felt subjectivities of love and care impact upon the making and unmaking of family lives? These and other related questions will be addressed while we engage in the close reading of Merav Shohet’s anthropological monograph Silence and Sacrifice. Family Stories and the Limits of Love in Vietnam. We will use one part of the course to ponder the interlinkages between families, love, and care in theoretical and empirical terms, while another part gives us the chance to share and exchange our reflections on how to write about family stories in an anthropological sense.
