Kommentar/Beschreibung

The global push for greener economies is increasing the demand for key minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, precious rare earths, copper, and other minerals that are used in the production of batteries, renewable technologies, electricity technologies, and electrification. This course will cover the political and economic conflicts that are related to those minerals. It will start by explaining what makes specific minerals classified as “critical” or “strategic.” It will also ask how such a classification is embedded in economic and geopolitical priorities. Then, the course will look into the role that mineral extraction plays in the energy transition process and the environmental and social problems related to mining. In addition, it will look at the positive and negative aspects of mining. Lastly, the course will analyze the global supply chains of minerals along with the political economy of extraction. This will include the present and past relations within and between states and companies/corporations. For instance, the tensions in mining policies, geopolitical competition, the history of colonization, and the ongoing implications of this history for mineral extraction.
