Comment/Description

The seminar will explore the genre of the British historical film as a form of cultural expression that has ‘as much to say about the present in which it was made as about the past in which it was set’ (James Chapman). We will consider British historical films from the early twenty-first century that dramatize major concerns of twentieth-century British society, culture, and politics. These include, but are not limited to, the two world wars, women’s rights, the changing role of the monarchy, and the question of national identity. Our discussion will aim to understand the represented concerns, figures, and developments in their own time as well as their significance for the present.

Prospective students should note that the course includes required viewing (see below). While we will watch selected scenes in class over the course of the term, there will be no public screenings of the whole films. Participants are expected to obtain and watch all films prior to the scheduled class discussions. The films can be accessed through commercial providers online or are available as inexpensive DVD. All will also be provided on the seminar’s shelf in the university library.

Please note that prior registration for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
