Comment/Description

This course explores how environmental and social factors intersect to shape mental well-being—and how collective psychological processes, in turn, influence the environment.
We draw on ecopsychology and critical theory to:
- Investigate how environmental crises (e.g., climate change) and mental health challenges (e.g., eco-anxiety, burnout) are intertwined.
- Examine how capitalist norms, colonial legacies, and social definitions of “normal” behavior contribute to both ecological harm and psychological distress.
- Introduce frameworks such as the ecological self and the ecological mind that offer holistic ways to understand identity, society, and nature.
- Consider personal, societal, and policy-oriented changes that could address environmental and mental health issues in tandem.
