Comment/Description

This seminar examines classic and lesser-known short stories by women writers in 19th-century America. We will begin our seminar with an overview of the genre and historical contexts (e.g., genre theory, canon formation, print and magazine culture), before we look at specific periods and topics: such as, early women short fiction (e.g., Catharine Maria Sedgwick, “Cacoethes Scribendi,“ 1830; Lydia Maria Child, “The Quadroons,” 1842); working-class and social reform literature (stories by Rebecca Harding Davis and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper); (Gothic) regionalism (e.g., Harriet Elizabeth Prescott Spofford’s “Circumstance,” 1860; Sarah Orne Jewett, “The White Heron,” 1886); indigenous and ethnic voices (e.g., Zitkála-Šá, “The Soft-Hearted Sioux,” 1901). We will cover a broad range of issues, including race, class, and gender, as well as environmentalism, Civil War era, genre theory, canon formation, and the emergence of magazine culture.
