Kommentar/Beschreibung

Dialect writings are usually seen through the lens of linguistics. Typically, practitioners of the linguistic approach determine the phonological accuracy of literary renderings of speech. We will deviate from this approach to dialect writing and focus on the different roles literary dialects play in literature and culture. Our journey will begin with the pre-19th century play The Contrast by Royall Tyler (1787) to investigate the correlation between national identity and the rise of a new American language – the Yankee dialect. We will then examine different regional identities (e.g., the rural dialect other) in the 19th century short stories of the Southwestern Humorists (e.g. Augustus Baldwin Longstreet) and local color authors (e.g., Kate Chopin) and continue to study the emergence of the Black voice in slave narratives (e.g., Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, excerpts), before we explore the topic of black subversion and hybrid identities in Charles W. Chesnutt’s short fiction. Our seminar will cover a variety of topics and periods, ranging from the American revolutionary period to the early republic and realism.

The course material will be made available on the ILIAS platform.
