Comment/Description

"put one's foot in it", "toe the line", "get one's leg over" – all these are stable meaningful units larger than one word whose meaning cannot be fully predicted from their constituents. Expressions like these are the subject of phraseology. In this seminar, we classify and analyse phraseologisms, we look at collocation, productivity, meaning patterns, occurrence and connotations. We also deal with idiomatic slang, e.g. "to get one's knickers in a twist".
