Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course introduces analytical perspectives and ethnographic examples about the entanglements of culture and psyche from anthropology’s subfield of psychological anthropology. What has this strand of anthropology to offer to hegemonic understandings of affective affliction, emotional suffering, and pathological conditions? What may we learn, as well as teach, from psychological anthropological standpoints if we conceptualize mental illness as an extraordinary experience? What, after all, counts as such an extraordinary experience in local and global contexts and how do individuals, societies, and institutions deal with the extraordinary? We will engage in regularly readings and shared discussions based on cases that we mainly draw from Janis Jenkins’ book Extraordinary Conditions. Culture and Experience in Mental Health (2015). Students, however, are also welcome to suggest further readings and related sources that will allow us to grasp the social and cultural complexities of mental illness and health in critical and comprehensive ways.
Recommended Reading: Jenkins, J.H. 2015. Extraordinary Conditions. Culture and Experience in Mental Health. University of California Press.
