Comment/Description

This block seminar explores the genre of folk horror in British literary and cultural artefacts, focusing in particular on its revival in the twenty-first century. In the scope of this course, we will not only discuss the history of the genre but also jointly turn to the question of what this mode – in which the landscape, for instance, plays a dominant role – can tell us about past and present global issues, ranging from rural communities and customs, religious extremism to gender and the environmental crisis. After engaging with selected literary folk horror narratives, our particular focus will rest on contemporary folk horror films produced by British filmmakers Ben Wheatley and Alex Garland.

Primary Texts/Films:
Kane, Paul and Marie O’Regan (eds.). Beyond and Within Folk Horror. London: Flame Tree Publishing, 2024. (excerpts will be provided)
Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England (2013)
Alex Garland’s Annihilation (2018)
Ben Wheatley’s In the Earth (2021)
Alex Garland’s Men (2022)
