Kommentar/Beschreibung

Together we will read and discuss the recently published book by the U.S. historian Brandon Bloch, Reinventing Protestant Germany: Religious Nationalists and the Contest for Post-Nazi Democracy. Bloch examines the transformation of Germany’s Protestant churches from institutions that had long served as strongholds of nationalism and militarism—and that largely supported the Nazi dictatorship after 1933—into key proponents of constitutional democracy and human rights in the postwar era.

The course thus provides insight into the history of West Germany after 1945. At the same time, it offers training in reading and critically discussing scholarly literature in church history.

We will read the book in its English original and conduct most discussions in English. The course is therefore well suited to practicing and improving academic English in a small, supportive, and collegial setting.
