Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar explores the novel as a form shaped by and shaping the power of language, from the 18th century to the present. We will examine how narrative voice and genre conventions construct and/or question authority, identity, emotions, dependence and resistance across different literary periods and cultural contexts. We begin with Daniel Defoe’s "Moll Flanders" (1712), in which a picaresque first-person narration questions moral agency in the context of her (economic) survival; the text also displays with great satirical irony the performativity of confessions. Our next reading is then Emily Bronte’s novel "Wuthering Heights" (1847), a much more complex novel than the hyped controversial recent movie version lets on. Bronte uses framings, embeddings and deeply unreliable narratives to present by turns selfish passions and their destructive powers, a ghost story, a superbly masked malignant narrator (one of several), class exclusion, misogyny, and violent abuse, all further complicated by religion, property and Victorian social hierarchy. Moving to contemporary fiction, we will next read Tara June Winch's "The Yield" (2019), a postmodern, Australian novel that juxtaposes documents, personal testimony, and Wiradjuri language reclamation to interrogate settler colonial abuse, and the resilience of Aboriginal culture in contemporary culture. Finally, Carys Davies' novel "Clear" (2023) offers a historical novel that engages with the power of translation and emotional connection to suggest a very different, unusual resolution to the conflicts of the Scottish Clearances (then) and human divisiveness (now).
Throughout, students will engage with central concepts in narrative theory and cultural criticism—such as focalization, intertextuality, discourse, and translation —while developing essential skills in close reading, excerpting secondary sources, academic research and writing and oral presentation.
