Kommentar/Beschreibung

Psychological Anthropology, a strand in social and cultural anthropology which – very broadly speaking – examines the interlinkages between society and the human psyche, has been on the move in recent years. It always sought to counterbalance universalist (psycholo-gical and psychiatric) approaches to experience, subjectivity, and vulnerability by using eth-nographic detail and particularity to deconstruct related hegemonial paradigms. In line with a general shift in our discipline towards more public/engaged forms of interaction with society, however, contemporary psychological anthropologists now commonly envisage their research on the basis of a much stronger social and political commitment. This course invites students to learn about and discuss some of the innovations in the field of psychologi-cal anthropology through shared readings as well as conversations with colleagues from this field, who will be invited to the class to share their experiences with us as engaged resear-chers across various disciplines and different societal publics.
