Kommentar/Beschreibung

Research starts with relationships. How one positions themselves within the communities they work with is the initial step of field work. This course, therefore, is an introduction to community engaged educational research approaches with an overview of the research concepts and processes, research problem, literature review, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and reporting while critically examining how positionality, power, culture, and ethics shape every stage of the inquiry process. With the phases of exploring who you are as a researcher, designing an inquiry, doing research, and returning knowledge throughout the seminar; you will learn research by doing research via engaging with communities, identifying issues that matter to those communities, and collaboratively designing and conducting a full cycle of study by and for the communities. Content addressed includes arts based research, historical movements in critical qualitative inquiry, feminism, queer theory, ethnomethodology, autoethnography, reflexive thematic analysis, and content analysis.
1. Core purpose of this course is to apply critical qualitative design, data collection, and analysis by conducting an actual participatory study. Qualitative research is best learned by living, doing, and interrogating it in real time.
2. The seminar structure operates as a discussion- and activity-based seminar where course substance is driven by student field experiences, readings, and questions. Members share responsibility to make class time educative as a community of professionals.
3. Professional engagement requires responsible, open-minded, thoughtful, and earnest participation. Engagement extends beyond "just talking" to include active speaking, listening, critiquing, and caring for others' learning.
4. Collaborative inquiry demands living with uncertainty, trusting the process, and growing together through mutual challenge, critique, and support.
5. Expect feelings of stress, confusion, and challenge alongside moments of connection, appreciation, and engagement, recognizing everyone is in a process of becoming.
6. Members create conditions for success by asking questions, taking notes, listening, and remaining open to the unexpected. How you contribute matters, and all thoughts, fears, and successes will serve as shared learning opportunities.
7. You will not be graded on perfect English grammar. The language is just the medium for us to try to understand each other the best way possible. Therefore, although the classes will be held in English, you can always code-switch and draft&submit your papers in your native language. I will just have to provide feedback in English.
