Kommentar/Beschreibung

The American South has always been a significant region with its unique history, culture, literature, and identity. This course will explore a range of texts and genres (a novel, poems, short stories) from contemporary Southern literature and focus on the ways in which writers from the mid-20th century to the present have struggled with the legacies of a conflicted past, modernity, and a globalized world. We will explore how modern Southern authors address issues such as race, class, gender, environmental change, poverty, and domestic violence, and include popular culture writings and films in our course discussion. We will first examine significant moments of Southern history and classic criticism on the South (e.g., excerpts from W. J. Cash’s The Mind of the South, C. Vann Woodward’s The Strange Career of Jim Crow, and Eudora Welty’s “Place in Fiction”) before we will start our literary journey through the American South with contemporary voices as our guides – from Toni Morrison’s haunted Kentucky (Southern Gothic and slavery) to Jesmyn Ward’s swampy Mississippi (Black Southern experience) and Ron Rash’s poverty-stricken Appalachia (Working Class South) to Maurice Carlos Ruffin’s gaudy New Orleans (Southern Absurdity).
