Kommentar/Beschreibung

This seminar will explore three novels that thematize the experience of immigrants to Britain from various corners of the world. Focussing on the growing up of seventeen-year-old Kamir, who has both Indian and British roots, Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia (1990), which has achieved cult status, presents a witty geographical and social journey. Andrea Levy’s highly popular novel Small Island (2004) turns to immigration from another part of the Empire, the Caribbean, while Charlotte Mendelson’s Almost English (2013) focusses on a Hungarian family in England.
All three texts employ concepts which have been explored theoretically in recent decades. Historically, they react to the British Empire, the decolonization process, and major upheavals in Central and Eastern Europe. They also voice themes such as home and belonging, question stereotypes and identities, inappropriate adult behaviours, and they explore concepts of race and class. This seminar will combine textual analysis with a reading of select theory texts and their application.

This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamensklausur “Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in Autumn 2026.
