Comment/Description

This seminar is intended to introduce the maqam music system, instruct on the theory of maqams, various maqam modes, microtonal intervals, and oriental rhythmic structures, as well as compare these elements across diverse musical cultures featuring maqam music systems. The lecturer will provide transcriptions of selected repertoires, analyze them, and demonstrate them through performance. The seminar encompasses both theoretical and practical components; depending on the students' abilities and their respective instruments, students are expected to perform simple melodies and rhythms. Additionally, this seminar will be conducted in English; consequently, it also possesses the capacity to accommodate international students who are interested in learning the maqam music system.
