Kommentar/Beschreibung

How to address past injustices is one of the key questions of the day. Frequently, victims of historical harms and their descendants ask for material and symbolical compensation as well as for a say in how today’s societies narrate and frame these past events. Research on compensation for victims of historical injustice has become increasingly important both on the political and the historical agenda, often representing conflicting assessments on the epistemological significance of the concept of reparation. While for some settling disturbing issues of the past through reparations is a means of creating a future of common values, for others the actual trend toward reparation is seen as a symptom for the loss of universalistic ideals that foster particularism and potential frictions. Our seminar will explore different cases, types and models of compensation and reparation for past wrongs. We will deal with a historical topic of strong contemporary relevance. The German payments to victims of National Socialism, which are still one of the largest financial reparation undertaking in history, will be at the heart of our work, but we we will also discuss other global case studies of coming to terms with past injustice,

Modulleistung: Hausarbeit

Studienleistung: Zur Vorbereitung der Hausarbeit sind im Laufe des Semesters mehrere Studienleistungen zu erbringen (u. a. Bibliographie, Entwicklung einer Leitfrage, historische Kontextualisierung einer Quellenstelle, Entwicklung einer Gliederung für die Hausarbeit). Verpflichtende Studienleistung ist darüber hinaus die regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme an der Seminardiskussion und die Bearbeitung von Übungsaufgaben.
