Comment/Description

One of the most well-known and popular English writers of the long eighteenth century, Jane Austen (1775-1817), has attracted readers for over 200 years. Her novels seemingly portray the manners of the middle classes and the gentry, the institution of marriage, and the development of romantic relationships, while also probing into questions such as social order, women’s education, human experience, and the contrast between emotions and reason. The seminar will discuss three of her novels, Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Sense and Sensibility (1811), and draw particular attention to their engagement with major Enlightenment thinkers, for example John Locke, Adam Smith, David Hume, and Mary Wollstonecraft as well as to contemporary social and political contexts.
Students will need to have read the three primary texts at the beginning of the semester. Selected secondary sources will be announced at the beginning of the term and have to be prepared for individual sessions. There will be short assignments during the semester, and an oral presentation. Further requirements for credit points will be discussed in the first session.

Please note that prior registration (deadline: 7 April 2026) for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
This course can be attended in general preparation of the Staatsexamensklausur “Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in Autumn 2026.
