Comment/Description

Die Philosophin und Soziologin Jane Addams (1860-1935) gilt als Vordenkerin der sozialen Arbeit. Sie engagierte sich für das Frauenwahlrecht, gegen soziale Ungleichheit und in der Friedensbewegung. 1931 erhielt Addams (zusammen mit Nicholas Murray Butler) den Friedensnobelpreis.
Als Philosophin steht sie für eine Ethik der Zusammengehörigkeit aller Menschen. In ihrem Werk „Democracy and Social Ethics“ (1902) entwickelt sie ein eigenes Demokratiekonzept, das den Zusammenhang zwischen einer vermehrten gesellschaftlichen Beteiligung aller Menschen und einer friedlichen, gerechteren Gesellschaft betont. Demokratie fasst sie dabei nicht als ein reales politisches System auf, sondern als ein zu verwirklichendes Ideal.
Im Seminar werden ausschließlich englische Texte diskutiert, eine entsprechende Lesekompetenz wird vorausgesetzt.
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist im Studienbegleitprogramm von gender*bildet (Zertifikat Gender Studies) anrechenbar.
