General information

Course name Project seminar: Wahlmodul 1: Advanced sedimentology field trip to the Spanish Pyrenees (12 Tage)
Course number GEO.07408
Semester WiSe 2024/25
Current number of participants 15
Home institute Sedimentäre Systeme und Ressourcen
Courses type Project seminar in category Offizielle Lehrveranstaltungen
Type/Form Field trip
Participants This 12-day-long field trip is conducted in the Spanish Pyrenees, in the Ainsa-Tremp-Graus basins and their Eocene successions. These successions show a wide range of clastic sedimentary rocks ranging from terrestrial to shallow marine to deep water, including fluvial systems, tidal deposits, deltaic deposits and turbidite systems. The field trip has a focus on sedimentology and 3D outcrop modelling and how these can be used for reconstructing paleoenvironments. In addition, large-scale observations allow to discuss concepts of structural geology and basin dynamics.

The estimated cost per student is approx. €400-500 (for accommodations, car rental, airfare to Barcelona and food).
Pre-requisites The fieldtrip is aimed at MSc students in Applied Geosciences who have previosuly completed a course on basic sedimentology. The participants will learn a combination of traditional sedimentological (e.g. facies analysis, logging, mapping) and 3D modelling (e.g. drone, laser scanner) field techniques.
Learning organisation The students will learn how to:
1) independently study an outcrop from the sedimentological point of view;
2) recognize sedimentary structures, trace fossils and other sedimentological features;
3) use a laser scanner and a drone to make 3D outcrop models;
4) interpret the data to identify different paleoenvironments;
5) understand spatiotemporal variations in sedimentary processes across the basins.
Performance record The students will be evaluated with exercises in the field (50%) and a small report based on the field acquisitions (e.g. drone photos and laser scans) (50%).
