Comment/Description

William Shakespeare’s mature tragedies King Lear (1605) and Macbeth (1606) have been valued for their portrayal of good and evil, suffering, and the question of reconciliation. These philosophical themes transcend topical political issues to pursue the human journey as a conversion, and which portray the soul of man – and especially the soul of a ruler – as a structural force that threatens to destabilize a society whose monarch becomes unstable or turns evil. Starting with a historical overview of Jacobean England and a consideration of the key concerns of tragedy, the course will discuss the selected Shakespearean plays with regard to this genre, and with attention to the ways in which the plays engage with the legitimacy of authority, ambition, and power, desire and justice, love and betrayal, and madness and ageing.

Prüfungsleistung:
• Final written examination (90 min)

This course can be attended as preparation for the Staatsexamenklausur “Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in Spring 2025. Further preparation can be obtained in the Forschungskolloquium.
