Comment/Description

How are queer lives narrated, remembered, and made meaningful? Through key theoretical approaches from narrative studies and queer theory, this block seminar explores the entanglements of queer life in the United States through autobiographical writing by writers such as Gloria Anzaldúa, Alison Bechdel, Samuel R. Delany, Audre Lorde, and McKenzie Wark. Rather than understanding queerness solely in terms of sexual identity, the course approaches it as a broader framework for rethinking identity, time/space, memory, kinship, and belonging. Across a range of genres and media, participants in the block seminar will (re)consider how various forms of queer life narratives “shapeshift” (Fawaz) and how they challenge heteronormative notions of selfhood, self-representation, social legibility, and subjectivity.
