Comment/Description

This course is dedicated to modernist American drama of the 1910s and the 1920s. We will read and analyze selected plays by playwrights such as Eugene O'Neill, Susan Glaspell and others, examining their use of form, language, and themes in response to the social and cultural changes of the time. Through a close reading of these plays, students will gain a deeper understanding of the historical contexts in which these plays were written and their potential to be brought to the theater stage.

A finalized selection of plays will be published at the beginning of the semester.
