Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course can either be credited as seminar or as exercise. So, no specific knowledge or skills are required other than an interest in encountering. We will focus on encounters – more practically than theoretically. Therefore we will ‚encounter‘ the Association Deutsch-Armenische Freundschaftsgesellschaft Halle-Gyumri e.V. We will meet with some of their members which will give us both the opportunity to get to know the work of that specific association and the chance to ask questions concerning current political and religious challenges in the geographical region between Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Within the course visiting professor Harutyun Harutyunyan from Armenia will contribute with his expertise. By means of case studies on historical narratives, sacred traditions and national identities we will 'encounter' the complex entangled context of the Caucasian region. Guiding questions will be: What does it mean to encounter ‚others‘ and ‚one’s self‘? How to analytically trace different kinds of encounters using the program of Global Religious History? What may be the function of concrete historical narratives? In line with these questions we will be introduced to some theoretical concepts concerning the intersectionality of religious, culutral, national, and gender identities.
