Comment/Description

How do people age (succesfully)? How do people care (succesfully)? What does it mean to age and care (successfully) in our current times, and what does successful aging and care, and the lack thereof, mean to individuals and societies, and in time and space? In this course, which will offer a critical and relational introduction to the anthropology of aging and care, we will engage theoretical approaches and empirical data in order to explore phenomena of aging and care as social, emotional, and political processes that are inextricably linked with each other. Participants of the course are invited to read and discuss parts of anthropologist Sarah Lamb’s edited volume Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession: Global Per-spectives (2017), but they may also suggest other fitting literatures, to address larger questi-ons with regard to age-related vulnerabilities, social inequalities of care and the struggles of establishing more caring ways of dealing with the human condition of oldness and frailty.
Literaturempfehlung: Lamb, S. (ed.) 2017. Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession: Global Perspectives. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press.
Modulleistung: Will be announced at the first session.
This course can be accredited as part of the gender*bildet accompanying study program (Gender Studies Certificate).
