The genre of slave narratives, “autobiographical works written (or dictated) by men and women of African descent who had endured New World slavery” (Appiah xi) was a direct result of the system of slavery in place in the United States. This course will be dedicated to the genre of neo-slave narratives, “contemporary narratives of slavery” (Keizer in Dubey 333), written since the 1970s. Students will be familiarized with the genres “slave narrative” and “neo-slave narrative” and learn how to interpret these texts in light of their historical contexts, their socio-political impact, and their aesthetic complexity.
