Skills to be acquired in this module
  • Students are able to:
  • Understanding the need for cooperative Global Environmental Policy (GEP) and challenges associated with implementing effective GEP
  • Understanding the main arguments and incentive structures in shaping GEP
  • Knowledge in key International Environmental Treaties and actors
  • Insights in incentive based economic methods to analyze GEP
  • Basic knowledge of theoretical concepts explaining the need for and challenges of international treaty-making and politics around GEP
  • Practice in argumentation, negotiation and presentation skills and teamwork
  • Students are expected to develop 1) argumentation skills and apply them in a formalized debate on a topic related to Global Environmental Policy; and 2) negotiation skills and apply them during the Simulation of UN Negotiation over a Multilateral Environmental Agreement.

  • Natural resources, food policy and evolving role of agriculture in Global Environmental Policy
  • Global Environmental Challenges and reasons for Global Environmental Policy
  • Review of International Environmental Treaties: Rio Conventions - Convention on Biological Diversity, Climate (UNFCCC, Kyoto, Paris), UN Convention to Combat Desertification
  • Challenges to Global Environmental Cooperation - poverty, population growth, oil policy dilemma, from fossil fuels to renewables
  • Selected principles of international environmental policy and law: sustainability, participation, polluter pays, precautionary principle
  • Arguments around Climate Change and Global Warming, from science to action - video screening and formalized debates
  • Compliance and enforcement of Multilateral Environmental Agreements at the international and national levels - incentives, legal, economic and political perspectives
  • UNEP Simulation Game - Negotiations over a Multilateral Environmental Agreement
