Learning objectives: -Knowledge of the role of institutions in an economic setting including how they are embedded in an overarching governance architecture -Understanding of institutions as essentially market-driven outcome with the aim to economize on transaction costs -Ability to make informed choices between alternative institutional arrangements from a theoretical and practical point of view in order to create effective institutions -Ability to analyze current problems from practice based on the knowledge acquired in the course |

Contents: -Models and theoretical approaches from the (Neo-)Institutionalist tradition and related current approaches -Applications of institutional methodology to current problems from practice (changing subjects, e. g. institutional bypassing, platform regulation, etc.) -Institutions and interactive situations including negotiations, regulations, informal and formal rule-making, contract design and enforcement -Impact of institutional characteristics on economic outcomes |
