Comment/Description

Psychological anthropology, in its broadest sense, explores the linkages between society and human subjectivity. This strand is both an anthropological and a transdisciplinary endeavor, mostly reaching out to, but also criticizing, the so-called Psy-disciplines (such as psychiatry and psychology). In this course, we will take a particular look at the merits and the limits of a contemporary psychological anthropology that has, in recent years, emerged as a more critically engaged subdiscipline and that seeks to address questions of mental health, wellbe-ing, and care in relation to structural inequalities and the harsh realities of life. Apart from shared readings of contemporary works in this field, current research examples will be pro-vided to show how psychological anthropologists strive to meaningfully pursue critical en-gagements across disciplines and across different publics.
