Comment/Description

Native American writers have used the short story as a literary form to explore, challenge, and redefine Indigenous identity and American history. This course will examine Native American short fiction from the early 20th century to the present and trace its evolution alongside significant historical, political, and cultural shifts in Indigenous life and experience. We will discuss key theoretical concepts, such as Gerald Vizenor’s notion of survivance, the trickster figure (Paul Radin, Vizenor), decolonial thought (Linda Tuhiwai Smith), and Indigenous futurism (Grace Dillon). We will chart the development with the help of Native American short stories from a diverse group of Indigenous authors, including early works by Darcy McNickle, mid-century stories by N. Scott Momaday, and contemporary short fiction by Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Tommy Orange, Waubgeshig Rice, and Erika T. Wurth. Our course will explore themes of survivance, trickster strategies, urban Native identity, Indigenous horror, and speculative fiction. It will also feature Dr. Sarah Hernandez (Univ. of New Mexico) as a guest speaker (online) who will introduce us to Lakota literature and culture.

This course is "staatsexamensrelevant."
