Comment/Description

This reading course will cover some of the most important sources for understanding early Christianity in China and Central Asia. The reading materials include excerpts from the Xi'an “Nestorian” inscription, manuscripts from Dunhuang and Turfan, missionary reports and letters, as well as some Christian epitaph texts. The original texts will be provided along with their translations (English or German). The purpose of this reading exercise is to help students understand how late antique and medieval Christianity was introduced into the local contexts in China and Central Asia and how Christian intellectuals wrestled with translating Christian doctrines amidst Buddhist and Chinese Taoist influences.

The course consists of four sessions: 7.11.24, 14.11.24, 21.11.24, 28.11.24.

Für die Anrechnung der Lehrveranstaltung muss zusätzlich zur Übung die Vorlesung „Von Mesopotamien nach China: Mittelalterliche Christentumsgeschichte entlang der Seidenstraße“ (bestehend ebenfalls aus vier Terminen) belegt werden. Die Veranstaltungen können entweder als eine Übung oder als eine Vorlesung angerechnet werden.

This course can be credited in the study program of gender*bildet (Certificate Gender Studies).
