Comment/Description

Blockseminar im Juni 2019:

How is the US educational system so different from Germany, England, and the rest of Europe? Discover the US culture through its educational systems and values.
This course covers the US educational system from K-16 and, therefore, extends into issues concerning the structure of both the K-12 as well as the university systems. Discussion and lecture focus on the uniqueness and difficulties inherent to the US systems of learning, especially when compared to a German or European system of scholasticism. Topics will include, but are not restricted to: educational law, SIP, US High School Culture, Rankings, University Life, Sports in School.
All topics discussed in class and/or assigned to read are applicable to the exam: Only topics covered will be on the examination, which will be conducted in English language. Although your instructor speaks German, the culture and language are inextricably linked to a deeper understanding of the educational system, as it is an outgrowth of the culture that created it. The exam will consist of two sections: 1.) demonstration of knowledge pertaining to the structure and foundation of the US system of K-12 and higher education 2.) Usage of this information in order to speak directly to the concerns related to these systems in a broader context. Comparisons between the US system and the German/European systems of education are applicable.

This course will be taught by Professor Jolyon T. Hughes (Georgia Southern University).
