Comment/Description

‘Shakespeare was a little naïve. Because his monsters had doubts, bad dreams, pangs of conscience, guilt. They saw the spirits of those they had killed rising in front of them. But in real life, under real terror, [… t]hat was all sentimentality, false optimism, a hope that the world would be as we wanted it to be, rather than as it was.’ (Julian Barnes, The Noise of Time)

The course will introduce three texts of contemporary British historical writing that are set in the so-called ‘Second World’, i.e. Eastern Europe during the era of the Cold War.
Our discussion will look at different genres of historical writing and the ways in which their characteristics and features mediate historical events, personal lives, and memory. We will also identify the major themes and ideas the selected texts problematize in their creative imagining of the 'second world' and why these appear to be particularly interesting from a contemporary, post-Cold War point of view.
