Comment/Description

The restoration of the monarchy and the reopening of the theatres in 1660 marked the end of the so-called Interregnum and more than a decade of Puritan rule in England. Often described as the ‘silver age’ of English drama, the period is mainly remembered for its comedies, which will also be the focus of this course. Written to entertain an urban, wealthy, and fashionable audience, Restoration drama features elegant and witty dialogues, portrays and ridicules sexual lust, and problematizes social hierarchies and moral hypocrisy alike. After discussing major concerns of politics and culture in the Restoration era, we will examine three examples of Restoration drama in greater detail: William Wycherley’s The Country Wife (1675) with its presentation of stock characters such as the aristocratic rake, Aphra Behn’s portrayal of unequal gender and class structures in The Rover (1677), and William Congreve’s Love for Love (1695), which features the conflict of love vs. money.

The primary texts given below must be purchased in advance of the teaching term and in exactly the formats stated below. There will be short assignments during the semester, and an oral presentation. The module examination (“Prüfungsleistung”) will be a written exam (90 mins) on the plays and topics discussed in class. Further details will be introduced in the first session.

In addition, the course is open to students who wish to write their “Staatsexamensklausur – Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in “Anglistik: Literaturwissenschaft”.

Please note that prior registration for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
