Sonstiges	Dieses Seminar wird auf Englisch abgehalten. Studien- und Modulleistungen sind ebenfalls auf Englisch zu erbringen. Da einige der regulären Seminartermine entfallen müssen, gibt es am Nachmittag des Freitag, den 9. Juni, einen zusätzlichen Blocktermin, der ebenfalls verpflichtend ist.

Kommentar/Beschreibung

Known as one of the "world religions", Buddhism has been the dominant religious tradition in a part of the world that is home to almost one half of its population. While the majority of academic Buddhist studies have been exploring the doctrinal intricacies of various Buddhist traditions, in this course we will focus primarily on how Buddhist institutions such as temples and monasteries have been organising their lives not only as religious havens but as income-generating enterprises. To trace the ways in which Buddhist institutions have been embedded in wider social, political and economic structures, we will jointly read and discuss a range of anthropological case studies covering several Asian countries.

While focusing on the economic lives of Buddhist temples, the seminar will give an introduction to the basics of Buddhist doctrine and practice. We will also discuss pertinent anthropological concepts and consider the relevance of our case studies to broader debates within the discipline and contemporary society. We will jointly read short texts and students will be asked to prepare presentations based on selected readings. Written assignments will be based on a combination of short and book-length studies.
