1. The course will be presented in English.
2. In the course, current issues in intellectual property law are considered from a comparative point of view, having regard to European law (including German and United Kingdom law), US-American law and Australian law. Patent, trade mark and copyright topics will be covered – one day will be spent on each of these areas.
3. It is not necessary to have completed any intellectual property subjects previously.
4. Outlines will be provided for patents, trade marks and copyright to give you an indication of the topics which will be covered, the way they are structured and the legislation and court judgments which will be discussed. Copies of the presentations used in the course will also be provided.
5. There will be an examination at the end of the course. The examination will test only material covered in the lectures. Nevertheless, if you wish to read the court judgments referred to in the lectures, they can be found at:
www.austlii.edu.au for Australian court decisions;
www.bailii.org for United Kingdom court decisions; and
www.supremecourtus.gov for United States Supreme Court decisions.
There are also two books which you might find interesting: Emerging Challenges in Intellectual Property (Bowrey, Handler, Nicol (eds), Oxford University Press, 2011) and Global Intellectual Property Law (Dutfield and Suthersanen, Edward Elgar Publishing, 2008); they are not, however, required reading.
